Chicago born Triangle resident artist William Paul Thomas — who was part of the "Black On Black" exhibition at VAE Raleigh last October — explores how family structures model public conception of community.

Thomas' inspiration for the works, which are part of his Hot Pink Brick project, stems from revisiting snapshots of his family. "Bricks Need Mortar" reflects on the power of an image to create bonds and establishes memories that can be honored and revisited. The exhibition uses the reoccurring image of a cinder block to process the collision of childhood memories with adult insights.
