"Troublesome presence"
Jan. 24, 2019 - March 13, 2020
The Arts Council of Fayetteville - Cumberland County
301 Hay Street Fayetteville, NC 28301 (Map)
Exhibition statement: In 1852, Abraham Lincoln stood in the Illinois Statehouse and gave the eulogy for Henry Clay, a former member of Congress and former president of the American Colonization Society. During the speech, the future president of the United States referred to "free negroes" as a "troublesome presence" for slave-holders in the United States.
The artwork in this exhibition underscores how African-Americans have been the antithesis of “troublesome,” rather a community that has supported the ideals that America claims to stand for.
