Opening reception: 'Continuum of Change'

  • Continuum of Change 216 North Front Street Wilmington, NC, 28401 United States (map)

Author and Wilmington, NC native Larry Reni Thomas talks about Thomas C. Miller, a Black businessman who was banished from Wilmington during the 1898 Massacre. Video by William Paul Thomas.

Our latest exhibition opens Friday, July 9 in Wilmington, N.C. and is called "Continuum of Change." Through this group show, we look at the late Congressman John Lewis' words from his 2012 book, "Across That Bridge." In it, Lewis states: "It is only through examining history that you become aware of where you stand within the continuum of change."

It's through that framework that we look at nine historical figures depicted through portraiture in "Continuum of Change." Our aim is to highlight some of the many Black Americans who helped usher in change in the Wilmington area.

Learn more about the exhibition here and RSVP on Facebook.

"Continuum of Change" is part of Initiative 1897, which uses artwork and community dialogue to examine the centuries-long inequities that the Black community has faced. Learn more here and read this essay about the Initiative 1897.
